LEONES Y CIERVOS

Winning project in Espacio Convergente 2019 art residency and grant. Plena Inclusion, Repsol Foundation. Developed at Centro Down Madrid 3 Olivos.

The title of this project comes from the recurring imaginary of Iberian sculpture, primitive art of the spanish Peninsula. Lions and deer, therefore refers to the themes or characters that the participants choose for their pieces. The amulets resulting from this experience show their icons, their "lions and deer" of each ones personal culture. This creates a space in which the members have the opportunity to show what is valuable to them, what makes them feel safe and translate these emotions into pieces that represent it (or with which they identify). During the workshop, moments of reflection have been reinforced to generate a space in which personal languages are developed, where the quality of the work results from the intimate relationship between the creator and his/her creation.

The members of the project have also learnt about the artist's role, receiving the visit of Theo Firmo, visiting Taller Mediodia studio, learning about how to develop a work process and about the proper storage of their pieces. They have also been responsible for the preparation of the exhibition in Canis Majoris.

Raquel

Raquel Abellanas sews her objects for certain festivities, such as seasons of the year or holidays. She plans her future projects, and she describes their evolution in her diary.

Jose

“This picture. I like things to look good, I take care of details. I'm an artist to make these pictures. ”
Jose Martinez uses experiences he remembers in his creations. Jose has learned how to produce a work of art, and knows that it has to be "well drawn", without errors, framed.

Maria Estrella

The objects resulting from the workshop for Maria Estrella Perez are a product of the aura she creates. She reproduces an environment that she relates to artistic creation: she listens to music, chooses her wool and begins to crochet. Her work does not symbolize, but is the result of her conversations.

Covadonga

Sewing, for Covadonga Giraldo has been a constant while her life was changing. Those changes experienced lead her to focus on her work.

Karla

Karla Arteaga always thinks of others, many of her creations are dedications to other people, or are named after her friends. She chooses materials that remind her of everyday tasks and incorporates golden elements. Her pieces are the result of emotional actions such as wrapping, hugging, covering.

Azucena

Azucena Lafuente sews, shapes and traces to represent, not only characters, but their surroundings, their food and their interaction with others. Thus, the dog sleeps in the bed, children eat meatballs and the members of a family are united.

Victor

The rings and flags that Victor Aviles creates change their meaning, as his personal concerns vary every week. He uses these objects, which give him qualities, to reinforce features that make up his identity.

Natalia

“I like ornaments. I like contemporary ballet and the queen's costumes. ”
Natalia Naglic's work produced for "Leones y Ciervos", are a search for self-realization, an effort to show herself what she is capable of.

Rocio

“I want to show everyone what I can do, show my work and my skills. These are samples of different things I can do. ”
Rocio Garcia has a work process where she starts with techniques such as crochet to create her own patterns.

Eduardo

Eduardo Chacon collects actions that shape his personality. Edu is open to exploring new materials, he is hardworking and meticulous.

Sergio

The tasks in which Sergio Centeno is involved have a decisive influence on his mood. He knows what he likes to work on, and his pieces for Espacio Convergente group these tasks. Sergio has a special taste for balance and color.

Victor

Victor Sanchez uses movies to find his own representative symbols and searches for an identifying animal and sign. His pieces in "Leones y Ciervos" are phases of this exploration.
